We’re so sorry that you’re going through this. We recognise that hopes and dreams, our love and yearning for a baby, our ’emotional investment’ can begin before we are even pregnant. And when we lose that baby, it really hurts. We grieve for our baby and we grieve for the loss of the future we may have planned, an entire life that should have been different to the one we have now.
There is no sliding scale of grief, we only know that this baby was real and your grief is valid and real. And we at Philip’s Footprints acknowledge that grief.
As well as offering support, we can also signpost you to the following charities below with helpful information and further support.
Whilst the Government of Jersey now has a parental bereavement leave benefit, it should be noted that this is only from 24 weeks gestation onwards. the Amendment 14 Employment (Jersey) Law ensures that bereaved parents are entitled to a Day 1 (so from the first day they start work), statutory, 2 weeks of parental bereavement leave after the loss of a baby or child (including stillborn babies from 24 weeks). This is to be used in the first 56 weeks after loss, so includes that first anniversary which can be so very hard to bear.
Mindful not to put a financial burden on employers, these 2 weeks are unpaid however a payment scheme has also been agreed and will match the average weekly earnings of £920 (so £1,840 for 2 weeks per working parent). The professional in contact with the bereaved parents should initiate this payment.
